Weirdo doom metal, this time sounding even industrial at times. Persistence in Mourning is one of the most original and unique bands in the country, so if you haven't heard them, you've waited long enough. This is the one to get. The cassette features 8 songs and nearly an hour of bleak and disturbing music. Get it now from our friends at Land of Decay.

At this juncture, I was supposed to tell you about the Ash Borer Discography 2xCS, but it promptly sold out, as should be expected when it comes to a band that fucking good. Land of Decay are out, but the band may (or may not) have copies soon. Keep your eye on their blogspot for info.

Andy Lippoldt is a recording engineer, a record label owner and a musician. He owns a recording studio in Oklahoma called The Gorgon Head, where he offers freelance tracking, mixing and mastering services. With his wife, he operates the Witch Sermon Records, through which he has released some of his own recordings, as well as cassettes from Moss, Secrets She Kept and Unearthly Trance. His solo projects are Persistence in Mourning and ZZ, and he is involved in a number of collaborative projects, including Gorgontongue (with Ganzmord), Rab'ha (with M. Gregg Standridge - Songs About Trains and the People Inside

This album technically isn't out yet but will be soon. I doubt any HSS readers have heard of Gregg before. He's an incredible musician and songwriter. This album is probably more country influenced than his older stuff but he's really hit his stride with this one. Think Hank Williams Sr. meeting Woody Guthrie or Leadbelly, but it's surprisingly original. It varies from upbeat blue grass/folk to hauntingly beautiful acoustic pieces with a great strings section. An impressive story teller as well. This will appeal to fans of the aforementioned legends as well as Nick Cave, Neil Young and even some of the more subdued parts of Swans. It's a long album, over an hour, and there is no filler at all. I believe this to be the work of a legitimate genius. Inspiring.

The Guilt Of... - The Guilt Of...

Any album released by At War With False Noise is a confident buy, but this one is my favorite. Old school industrial/PE/spoken word stuff. Mike Williams from Eyehategod makes up half of this band. I really hope they stay active as this is fantastic.

Redrighthand - They Sang And Chanted For Hours, Then Locked In Hundreds Set Themselves Ablaze

Speaking of At War With False Noise, this is another great one. Puts me in mind of Khanate, but I think these guys are better.

Locrian - Drenched Lands

These guys are one of my absolute favorite bands and this album is their best in my opinion. I also have been listening to André Foisy's solo stuff a lot.

Sinister - The Silent Howling

Sinister is a band that's been on regular play with me since high school. This one shifted back towards the material on Cross the Styx.

Ganzmord - In Praise of the Weeping Filth

The most hateful music I've ever heard. Very dark.

Secrets She Kept - La Fin Absolue Du Monde

Blackened death/thrash stuff. Reminds me of early Sepultura and Behemoth.

Brand new studio album from weird Oklahoma doom project Persistence in Mourning. Of all the releases from this project, this one is arguably the most dynamic: from its use of acoustic instruments like piano, acoustic guitars, to its use of buzzed out guitars and distorted and chanted vocals, swirling synthesizers, and sampled conspiratorial oration.
This is unsettling stuff. A truly bizarre and awesome album? I suppose that a listener could refer to this as doom, but the “metal” tag doesn’t always work for it since it implies a level of provinciality in sound. These pieces at times have a more industrial sound, reminiscent of early industrial music. Bizarre, bleak, burned-out, and brilliant. This is definitely a project to look out for in the coming year.

Artwork for this release was prepared by Black Uroborus Illustrations. Recorded and mastered by zz and professionally duplicated on chrome high resolution tape.
