March's ABLATION. was a clandestine dissection of some video footage featuring BLOODYMINDED. For May HANNUM joined forces with frequent collaborator SCOTT TRELEAVEN and made DEATH POSTURE. For July he collaborated with ALEXANDER BINDER and they made DARK MATTER/DUNKLE MATERIE while for September he created PURIFICATION. For his final publication of the year he teamed up with 5NAKEFORK RECORDS and published his first bound book, THE UNHOLY BOW.
Slowly the crowd gathers, heads hung as the musicians pick up their instruments. Upon the first note of feedback the heads start moving. Both performer and witness begin a ritualized dance in a flurry of hair, a profane genuflection. An unholy bow.
THE UNHOLY BOW is the final publication in artist TERENCE HANNUM's bi-monthly publication series for 2011. This issue focuses on the group ritual of the headbang ubiquitous in heavy metal culture, by cropping drawings and digital photo collages into a printed cadence and features a brief musing cadence from the artist. PURIFICATION is an inversion, a reversal of corruptions, a necessary portion to complete the profane and a process toward attaining another state. This publication, which is the least dark of Terence Hannum's publications, is not only on white paper but it exploits this ground and comes tucked inside of a white envelope that is embellished with a laser etched white acrylic plate. PURIFICATION takes, as its base, a set of drawings that are then inverted and edited alongside more graphical elements such as a variable pentagonal grid shattered like a monochromatic stained glass window, the disembodied fragment of a drawings' edge acting as a frame echoing towards the light. No text, just image.

DARK MATTER/DUNKLE MATERIE combines the haunting photography of German based artist Alexander Binder in visual collaboration with artist/musician Terence Hannum. In a limited edition of 200, this deluxe black and white publication comes in a printed black envelope and contains a DVDr of one of Hannum's recent videos Epiclesis (10m38s / 2011).
Separated by the centerfold, where the DVD is affixed, this publication is composed of two distinct parts by each artist. On one side Hannum's hazy black and white video stills, dissected from the video on the DVD, are edited for the printed page creating a murky narrative between frozen landscapes and a mysterious ritualistic musical event. On the other side Binder's foggy photographs present a procession of profane images, some lost to their process, and others more explicit in their intensity. We witness altars, sacrifices and wonderful abstractions.
More on Alexander Binder: Alexander Binder was born on Halloween night 1976 in the Black Forest/Germany. He’s a totally self taught photographer, having never attended a photo class in his life. Even his lenses are mostly self built from optical toys, old soviet cameras, prisms or plastic crap. A fan of Hans Bellmer and Herbert List, Alexander creates mystical and ethereal photos which are characterized by a strong passion for the spiritual, the surreal and the occult.

DEATH POSTURE is the latest zine collaboration by artist/musician Terence Hannum and artist Scott Treleaven. In a limited edition of 100, the zine includes a set of two pins in a hand-stamped envelope. DEATH POSTURE features a dialogue between Hannum's elegant gouache drawings and raw super8 film footage by Treleaven. A strange, organic kind warmth emerges in the subtle variances of grainy black and white film strips laid out against the intensity and starkness of Hannum's drawings. Towers of amplifiers, prostrated figures, and candles flesh out Treleaven's documents of a visit to an Italian ossuary, fighting dogs, and an anonymous figure. After the success of their first zine, CALL + RESPONSE, this new publication provides an even more subtle iteration of their on-going exchange of overlapping ideas and images.

ECSTATIC SKIN: The Evolution of Subcultures in a Global World
Deeply tanning their skin and braiding their hair into cornrows, Japan’s Ganguro Girls mix contemporary Japanese make-up and attire with that of American hip-hop into a striking new form of personal expression. By incorporating previous subcultures and utilizing camera phones and online promotion, the Ganguro Girls emerged in the 1990s as a new subculture paradigm. In the past, subcultures grew slowly over time and in relative seclusion. Now, such subcultures like Black Metal Music, to Burners, and the dandies of the African Bakongo increasingly engage with the media to broaden their profile and recruit new members. Bringing together sociologists with real members of these communities, Ecstatic Skin explores the impact of digital and social media on the evolution of these subcultures, an environment of cultural production which shapes personal identity as intensely as any physical space.

ABLATION. contains video stills cut from a video Terence Hannum shot featuring a live set of power-electronics group BLOODYMINDED originally intended to be edited into an installation but never quite finding the right cut. This set dates from 2007 when Bloodyminded played with Carlos Giffoni, Burning Star Core and Prurient at the Flowershop in Chicago.
Instead of being cut into a video the images were removed as stills from the source footage, enlarged and placed into a new sequence that emphasizes the dark setting and intensity of this unique group's intense live performance. The title of this zine derives from Mark Solotroff's inimitable lyrics to the song "Genital Panic" from the album Gift Givers and seeks to link the zine's process with its subject one of removal and excision.

Terence Hannum's drawings, paintings and video installations cull the periphery of heavy metal and hardcore music subcultures to analyze the nexus of music, myth, audience and ritual. In addition to the above work, Hannum is a prolific zine maker and for his show in Western Exhibitions’ Gallery 2, Hannum will present a box set of 12 zines, all made in 2010, as well as drawings, paintings and other work that inspired the publications.
Exemplifying the DIY spirit inherent in the scenes he’s documenting, his use of the zine relates to the format’s origin, that of the self-produced fanzine. Hannum recontextualizes elements of his drawings, paintings, installations and even sound work in his zines, at times documenting the above works, but also casting new narratives intrinsic to the multi-page format.
Every month in 2010 Hannum produced a new zine, each one taking a different format, maximizing the possibilities of the cheaply printed page. He achieves remarkable textures, surfaces and images through seemingly simple combinations of toner on white, black and gray papers. Every subsequent zine ups the ambition from the prior one, as Hannum experiments with color xeroxes, collaborations (with New York artist Scott Treleaven, Chicagoan Elijah Burgher and Swedish musician/designer Thomas Martin Ekelund), vellum, sealed wax covers, obi bands and mini-CDs. Hannum pushes the zine to its extremes, much like the extreme sonic scenes he’s documenting and influenced by.

"The Infinite Light, A Living Silence, Whose Name Cannot be Uttered."
Completing artist and musician Terence Hannum's year long monthly zine project, Heresies, brings Swedish musician and designer Thomas Martin Ekelund into the fold. The twelfth and final zine in Hannum's series functions much like a call and response on the fringes of some mystic quest culling content from Gnostic heretics to further interrogate the void where Ekelund would design a mystical sigil and Hannum would respond with an invocation in gouache.
Both accomplished musicians, Ekelund with his now defunct project Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words and Hannum with his solo work and contributions to Locrian contributed to the audio CDR. And the audio content is immense. An over thirty-four minute massive drone work out that does not fear melody or haunting ambience. "Heresies" was also built on a back and forth between Hannum and Ekelund with Ekelund on Guitar, Bass, Piano, Organ, iPhone and Field Recordings and Hannum providing layers of vocal chants, singing and profanations.
Heresies the zine and CDR also comes packaged in a deluxe fold-over 7" square letter-pressed Stumptown Arigato pack made of thick (18pt.) brown 100% PCW recycled chipboard featuring a work from both of the artists on letter-pressed onto its two sides. Letterpressed by Dexterity Press and hand assembled.

For the most part LEADLIGHT is a study of sacred windows, inverted, cut, chopped and reintegrated by ancient ritual instruments, X-acto, scissor, tape and Xerox. The spaces are transformed, profaned, desecrated, elevated and abolished. Forms repeat, echo and collide in the black & white Xeroxes. Framing this amalgamation are cropped Xeroxes on black paper pulled from Terence Hannum’s drawings. Normally these holy windows are above shrines of amplifiers or headbanging sentinels, yet here they are removed and presented away to enhance the solemnity of these decorations and portals.

Acts of Contrition is the ninth zine in Terence Hannum's monthly series of publications for 2010. Printed to accompany Terence's exhibition New Rites at the Richard E. Peeler Art Center at DePauw University, Greencastle, IN in 2010 and features most of the work in the exhibition.
Acts of Contrition focuses on the live event, combining reproductions of Terence Hannum's drawings and for the first time in the series, his oil paintings, paired together into a dark narrative where the live event becomes the locus of myth, ritual and sacrifice. This locus is communicated by the view of the back of an audience witnessing a live performance, halos of stage lights, illuminations through sheets of fog, silhouettes of backlines with bonfires, candles and masses of hair in mid headbang.

Terence Hannum's paintings, drawings and video installations employ the imagery and rituals of underground music subcultures as a means of exploring the transcendence and impermanence of sound and performance, and the group catharsis experienced by those who surrender to them.
As a part of the exhibition Terence's new zine for the month of September Acts of Contrition will be made available at the opening. LAND OF DECAY will be carrying it shortly.

A continuation of Locrian member Terence Hannum's monthly series of publications for 2010, "Summoning" combines drawings of candelabras, bonfires and stage lights copied on black paper with textural studies of analog tape, surrounding a core of pages documenting an analog tape sculpture installed at Peregrine Program in July 2010.
This monthly project sees each zine change in format, here "Summoning" introduces a deluxe package of a jewelry box adorned with drawings and sealed by a black obi band to house both the zine AND the addition of a 3" audio CD. The CD contains a the tape loop from the original installation with its brief vocal composition looping for over 20 minutes in a single track also titled "Summoning". Part document and part art object "Summoning" attempts a meditative position while examining the role of the rite and music.

The title of the zine is lifted from a passage in William Blake's "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell":
"beneath us was nothing now to be seen but a black tempest, till looking east between the clouds & the waves, we saw a cataract of blood mixed with fire, and not many stones' throw from us appear'd and sunk again the scaly fold of a monstrous serpent."
