The Inarguable on Locrian/Horseback "New Dominions"

When I first heard about this collaboration from one Jenks Miller (sole member of Horseback), I about crapped my pants. I had been a fan of Locrian for a few years (check out my review of their last album here and a video interview here), and Horseback's "The Invisible Mountain" LP reissue was a fresh memory, so young, excitable me was overcome with joy and a newfound impatience...and it's finally here!

This collaboration is a complete goldmine of textures, ranging from the to the harsh, desolate, and creepy sounds of "The Gift" to the lush, pretty, and awe-inspiring drones of "Epitaph." Ever the experimenters, this four-part collaborating team effectively demonstrates each band's duality through these two songs. We all know Locrian are no strangers to the dark and noisy (especially those of us who saw them open for Agalloch in Chicago), but for those of you who haven't heard Horseback's material outside of the two full-lengths, this is a great jumping off point for Mr. Miller's back-catalog.

Interestingly enough, the making of this post is the first time I've ever seen the artwork for this fantastic one-sided 12" (the other side is an etching!). The fantastic Denis Forkas Kostromitin's hazy, uneasy style fits this collaboration perfectly; it is intriguing and perhaps even comforting, but there is a lingering feeling that you just can't take. A bad taste in your mouth, if you will; growing, menacing.

Turn off the lights and let this envelop you.

This release, and many others, will be available at Utech Records Music Festival in Milwaukee this coming June 11th!

ECSTATIC SKIN: The Evolution of Subcultures in a Global World



Deeply tanning their skin and braiding their hair into cornrows, Japan’s Ganguro Girls mix contemporary Japanese make-up and attire with that of American hip-hop into a striking new form of personal expression. By incorporating previous subcultures and utilizing camera phones and online promotion, the Ganguro Girls emerged in the 1990s as a new subculture paradigm. In the past, subcultures grew slowly over time and in relative seclusion. Now, such subcultures like Black Metal Music, to Burners, and the dandies of the African Bakongo increasingly engage with the media to broaden their profile and recruit new members. Bringing together sociologists with real members of these communities, Ecstatic Skin explores the impact of digital and social media on the evolution of these subcultures, an environment of cultural production which shapes personal identity as intensely as any physical space.

LOCRIAN member Terence Hannum will be presenting with writer Brandon Stosuy on Black Metal, Subcultures and zines. Terence will also have copies of his new zine DEATH POSTURE(images included), a collaboration with artist SCOTT TRELEAVEN available then as well.

Locrian did a remix track for the Formication CD "The Eyes of Erodern Reviema" a while ago and it's finally available at Small Doses.

The Formication CD proper is really strong stuff and highly recommended.

Formication is Alec Bowman & Kingsley Ravenscroft, the miraculous electric musical ensemble from Nottingham in the UK. They create unique rhythmic, chaotic yet structured works, twisting a variety of sounds into creeped-out electronica, frozen ambience and sporadic wayward beats. The music of Formication strays into dark territory, inhabiting forgotten grounds; less of a showcase for new technology and more an essential medium for the expression of the human psyche, where the soul is the interface. Described by The Wire magazine as ‘sonic occultists’, they can be found “wandering a dream landscape somewhere between the ritual ambience of Coil and the electronic space drift of Tangerine Dream”. The Eyes of Erodern Riviema is a their most realzied work to date and a masterpiece start to finish. In addition to the regular cd edition, there is a limited (93 numbered copies) edition that includes an extra insert and a cdr with remixes by Hoor-paar-Kraat, Locrian, and Formication.
